Five most popular landmarks in Lisbon
There are several landmarks in Lisbon, Portugal. The five most popular ones are Casa dos Bicos, Castle of Sao Jorge,
They are some of the best attractions in Lisbon.
Casa dos Bicos
Casa dos Bicos is known as the "House of Spikes." This is because of the diamond shaped stones on the side of the building. It was built in the 16th century by Afonso de Albuquerque. It is one of the only buildings that survived the earthquake of 1755 in Lisbon.
Castle of Sao Jorge
Castle of Sao Jorge has a great view of the city. Some of its architecture dates back to the 6th century. Throughout the years it has been accompanied by the Romans, Visigoths, and the Moors. Now it is known as a peaceful retreat for visitors from all over the world.
The Belem Tower
The Belem Tower is known as Lisbon's symbol for the age of discovery. It was built in 1515 in the Manueline style architecture by Francisco de Arruda. It has inspired a lot of painters and historical figures throughout the years. At the front of building is the lady of safe homecoming.
Lisbon Cathedral
Lisbon Cathedral was built in the Romanesque style of architecture in 1150 by King Dinis. It was damaged by two major earthquakes but is still standing. It has two bell towers on the sides of the cathedral. Inside of the cathedral there are some extra treasures like religious art, icons, and relics.
Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls
Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls was built in the 17th century by Afonso Henriques in the Baroque style of architecture. It was used as a burial site for most of the kings of Portugal. It is one of the most famous buildings in Lisbon. Inside there are a variety of statues of the different saints.
These are just some of the most popular landmarks in Lisbon. There are more landmarks throughout the city. These are the ones I would recommend seeing first. These landmarks will make for a very interesting and fun trip to Lisbon for the whole family.
